Gig Harbor YC Sail Fleet
The Gig Harbor Yacht Club has an active sailboat program that includes both racers and cruisers. Our membership includes many very experienced sailors in both categories.
GHYC sponsors two major sailboat races each year. The Islands Race in March which is part of the Southern Sound Series held each winter, and the Lemans Race in November which is one of the most popular events in this area.
Islands Race March 17, 2018 – This is the 4th Race of the Southern Sound Sailing Series. The race starts outside of Gig Harbor entrance goes up Colvos Passage to a mark at the north end of Blake Island and returning down Colvos to Gig Harbor. Approximate distance 29.5nm. Register online at the Southern Sound Sailing Series Web site: www.ssseries.org . A paper registration form is included in the Islands Race NOR link below.
The Lemans Race features a unique start, in which boats are at anchor with sails down and the crew below decks. At the start, crews scramble topsides, hoist sails, and race out the mouth of Gig Harbor.
Several lower-key events are held each year, including the Jack and Jill Race in September and the May Thursday Evenings Races, held within the confines of Gig Harbor. All sizes of boats are welcome including windsurfers. These Thursday races are a community event that will be coordinated by GHYC but the individual races may be run by participants. Races do continue informally through June, July and August though not as a scored series.
NORs and entry form will be posted 6-8 weeks prior to the events.
